A file convert is an image converter that can convert one image format into another (such as JPG or BMP). This software is useful if you can't use an image, photo, graphic or other type of file because it's not supported in the place you want to.

Here is a list I have compiled of the best free image conversion software that I've ever used. Online services are my favorites because I can convert images through my browser, without having to download any software. However, I have also listed desktop applications because they offer their own advantages.

Image Candy

Image Candy is a relatively new discovery and I had to add it. This website has a lot of online tools that are free, including an image converter. It can convert images up to 2GB in size and supports a wide range of input formats.

Input formats: JFIF (PJPEG), JPG (PJP), TIFF, BMP.

Output formats: PNG, JPG, PDF and SVG

This converter is easy to use and converts large files. Upload one or more images to the website, rotate them if needed, and choose from the output formats supported. Download each file separately or as a group.

It works on any operating system. After two hours, your uploads will be automatically deleted.

XnConvert

XnConvert can convert any of around 500 image formats to your choice of about 80 other formats. It can convert around 500 different image formats into your choice of 80 other formats. This is a great tool to have on hand for those rare images that I cannot open.

The program also offers batch conversions, folder imports and filters, as well as resizing and other advanced features.

Input formats: BMP (BMP), EMF (EMF), GIF, ICO(ICO), JPG, PCX PDF, PSD, PNG, TIF and more

Output formats: PDF, PSD, PNG (PNG), RAW, TIF and more.

The publisher of XnConvert has a dedicated, free, command-line based image converter named NConvert. However, XnConvert's interface is far more intuitive.

It runs on Windows Mac and Linux. On the download page you can choose between 32-bit or 64-bit Windows and Linux versions.

Coolutils

Coolutils, another online image converter, is available without any download. This online converter converts images in real time, unlike some others.

Input formats: BMP (BMP), GIF (ICO), JPEG (PNG), and TIFF

Output formats: BMP (BMP), GIF (ICO), JPEG (PDF), PNG and TIFF

The original file has a size limit, but I'm not sure what it is. My 35 MB uploaded file was accepted, but the 40 MB did not.

This option allows me to rotate and resize images before converting them. It's not as useful as it should be, because the preview doesn't show what the image will look when it's converted.

This method can be used with any operating system.

Zamzar

Zamzar, an online image conversion service, supports the most popular photo and graphic formats as well as a few CAD files. You can either download the converted files from an email, or you can wait for the links on the download page.

Uploading a file is possible from your computer or a service that you use to store files (Dropbox Google Drive etc.). You can upload a file from your computer, a cloud storage service (Dropbox, Google Drive etc.) or another website by using its URL.

Input formats: 3FR (AI), ARW (BMP), CDR2, CR2, CRW (DNG), DWG, DXF; EMF, ERF; GIF; MDI, MEF (MRW), NEF, ORF; PCX, PEF(PNG), PPM, PSD (3FR), RAF, RAW (2FR), SR2, SVG, TGA/TIFF, TGA/WBMP/WMF, X3F and XCF

Output formats: AI, BMP (BMP), EPS, GIF (ICO), JPG, PS, PCX (PNG), TGA, TIFF and WBMP

Zamzar's conversion times are often comparable to FileZigZag (below). However, since you cannot download or upload multiple files simultaneously, you may want to try a more robust software program.

FileZigZag

FileZigZag, another online image converter, will convert the most common graphic formats. Upload the image, select the output you want, then wait until the download link appears on the page.

Input formats: AI, BMP CMYK CR2, DDS DNG DPX, EPS GIF HEIC ICO JPEG JPG NEF OTG PAM PBM PCX PGM PNG PPM PSD RGB RGBA SDA SGI SXD TGA TIF TIFF YUV

Output formats: AI, BMP CUR, DPX EPS GIF JPEG JPG PCX PDF PGM PNG PPM RAS SGI SVG TGA TIF TIFF YUV

As with any online file converter you will have to wait until the website uploads the file, and then again wait for the link to download (which can take a long time if you are in a queue). Since most images are small, this shouldn't be a problem.

Adapter

Adapter, an intuitive image conversion program with many nice features, supports a wide range of file formats. It is great because you can use it in two different ways depending on how comfortable you are with the advanced options.

It is easy to use, allowing you to drag and drop your images into the queue and choose the output format quickly. The size of each image file is clearly visible before and after conversion.

You can also use advanced options, including custom file names, output directories, quality and resolution changes, as well as text/image overlays.

Input formats: BMP, JPG, TIFF and GIF

Output formats: BMP, JPG, TIFF and GIF

Adapter works quickly and doesn't require you to upload files online in order to convert them. The software converts not only image files but also audio and video files.

Install this on Windows 10, 8, 7, or 11. This also works on macOS 13.x through 10.7.

Resizing.app

Resizing.app does not only support resizing, but also cropping, and of course, conversion. It's great that it works within my browser, and the UI is simple and easy to understand.

Input formats: JPEG (PNG), TIFF (HEIC), GIF and WEBP

Output formats: PNG, JPG, WEBP BMP and TIFF

This tool has a handy resize option that compensates for the limited formats supported. You can crop or resize the image to your desired dimensions. The optimizer can also help to reduce the size of the file.

It is a website and will work in any web browser.

DVDVideoSoft's Free Image Convert and Resize

It does exactly what it says: converts and resizes pictures. It doesn't support many image formats but it allows you to resize and rename several files at once.

Input formats: BMP, GIF and TGA

Output formats: BMP, JPG, GIF, and TGA

This program is easy to use and supports many popular formats. It also includes some extra features that you won't find in other image converters.

This program worked on Windows 11, but also Windows 8, 7, and XP.

PixConverter

PixConverter is a powerful tool that's easy to use. This program is on my list because of its batch conversions and the ability to import several photos at once from a single folder. It also supports image rotation, resizing and changing the color.

Input formats: JPG (JPEG), GIF (PCX), PNG (BMP), TIF

Output formats: JPG (JPG), GIF (GIF), PCX (PNG), BMP and TIF

If you work with these formats but don't want to use the online option, this is a good tool.

PixConverter is compatible with Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows 8 (where I tested it).

SendTo-Convert

It is a great choice, as the program can be automated so that you only have to choose Send To > SendToConvert when right-clicking one or more photos.

Set the default output format and quality as well as the output folder without opening the program. It's a great time-saver!

Input formats: BMP (BMP), JPEG (JPEG), GIF and TIFF

Output formats: BMP (PNG), JPEG (JPEG), and GIF

This link will take you to another page with several programs, including SendTo-Convert at the bottom.

Windows 8, Vista, XP and Windows 7 are listed as supported operating systems on the download page, but Windows 11 and 10 should also work. Download a portable version.
